Stirling's one of those places where you pull up to a job and you already know what you're going to find before you get the ladder off the ute. The older cottages along Druid Avenue and around the village centre — the stone-fronted ones built pre-war — often have original box gutters that haven't been touched in years. They hold a surprising volume of decomposed leaf matter, and once that composts down it's basically potting mix. Water just sits in it.

The bigger issue in Stirling compared to most Adelaide suburbs is the sheer variety of trees dropping debris. You've got the English oaks and plane trees that shed hard in autumn, but unlike a suburb in the flat metro, you've also got year-round eucalyptus and stringybark dropping bark strips and leaves all through summer. The gutters never really get a break. People living near the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden end of town often tell me they just cleaned their gutters a few months back and can't believe how much is back in there.

The bushfire angle is something I always raise with Stirling homeowners. This is BAL-rated country — the CFS Fire Danger Season runs roughly November through April, and a gutter full of dry bark and leaves sitting against a timber fascia is exactly the kind of thing that catches embers. Getting a clean done before September, ahead of the declared season, is just sensible.

The 1970s and 80s rebuilds scattered up the hill from the village are generally on galvanised or early Colorbond systems. Some of that older galvanised is getting thin at the joints now, and you only find out when you're up there clearing it out. Worth a look if your place is from that era.
