When I pull up to a job near Brighton Jetty, the first thing I check is the gutter profile and what it's made of. A lot of the older beach cottages along The Esplanade and Marine Parade are still running original galvanised steel gutters — and salt air at 12km from the CBD is no joke. You'll see white oxidation and pitting that looks superficial until you press on it and realise the metal's gone thin underneath. Homeowners are often caught off guard by how fast that happens here compared to, say, a suburb further inland.

The Norfolk Island pines are a constant source of grief. Those fine needles mat together when wet and sit in the bottom of the gutter like a sponge, holding moisture right against the metal. Combined with seabird droppings — and there's no shortage of gulls and corellas near the foreshore — you end up with a thick, acidic sludge that accelerates corrosion faster than a clean leaf bed would. I've cleared gutters on newer coastal rebuilds along Esplanade-adjacent streets that looked fine from the street but had pooled water sitting behind a needle dam all winter.

The modern rebuilds are a different story — Colorbond and aluminium systems that handle the salt environment a lot better — but they still need regular clearing. Coastal storm fronts between April and August push debris horizontally, not just down, so you get build-up on the windward side of the roof that wouldn't happen on a still day. Spring fronts from September onward add another load before summer arrives.

It's worth having your gutters looked at before the stormy season gets going. Blocked downpipes during a heavy coastal front means water finding its way into fascia boards and wall cavities — and that's a much bigger repair bill than a clean-out.
