Morphett Vale's grown up a lot since the 1980s, and most of the housing stock reflects that — brick veneer family homes on decent-sized blocks, plenty of mature gum trees in the verges and backyards that shed constantly. It's not just autumn leaf drop here. Eucalypts push out bark strips and leaf litter all year round, so gutters that looked clear in March can be half-blocked by June when the winter fronts roll in.

The older streets near Wilfred Taylor Reserve are where I tend to find the worst of it. Those homes were built when galvanised steel gutters were standard, and after 30-plus years, you're often looking at rust pitting along the back of the gutter, sometimes right through. Homeowners don't notice until they see a brown stain tracking down the brickwork or water pooling along the side of the house. By then the fascia behind the gutter's usually taken a hit too.

Tile roofs are common across the suburb, and the valleys between roof sections are where debris really builds up. Fine grit washes off the tiles over time and combines with leaf matter to form a kind of compacted sludge. Downpipes block from the bottom up — the pipe looks fine from the outside but there's a solid plug sitting just above the outlet.

Newer estate builds closer to the Main South Road end of the suburb are in better shape structurally, but they're not immune. Colorbond gutters on those homes are fine as long as they're kept clear — let debris sit in them through a wet winter and you're still inviting problems. I'd say most homeowners in Morphett Vale underestimate how quickly their gutters fill given the tree coverage on older streets.
