Burnside's one of those suburbs where the gutters look fine from the street, then you get up the ladder and find six months of eucalyptus bark packed in solid. The big gums along Greenhill Road and through the older sections near Beaumont don't follow a seasonal drop schedule — they're shedding leaves and stringy bark pretty much all year, and it builds up fast, especially in the valleys between roof sections.

The housing stock here is genuinely mixed, and that matters for how we approach a job. On the older sandstone villas — particularly around the streets running off Portrush Road — you'll often find box gutters built into the parapet structure. Those can't be seen from ground level, they hold more volume, and when they block, water doesn't run over the edge, it backs up under the roof. Homeowners usually don't find out until there's a stain on the ceiling.

Sloped blocks are common on the eastern side toward Mount Osmond. That changes the access situation considerably. We sometimes need ladder standoffs or different positioning just to get stable footing against a second-storey wall on a hillside property. It's not dangerous if you know what you're doing, but it's why AS/NZS 1891 compliance and $20M public liability cover actually matter — not just box-ticking.

The mid-century and newer luxury builds around Burnside Village tend to have more conventional fascia gutters, but they're not exempt from the leaf problem. If anything, the large established trees on those blocks make the load heavier. Getting a clean done before Adelaide's winter fronts arrive — April at the latest — keeps drainage working when the storms come through.
