What we see in Marion

Marion's a mixed bag when you pull up to a job. You've got post-war brick veneer homes from the 50s and 60s sitting next to 80s additions and newer townhouse developments. The older stuff is what keeps me busy — galvanised gutters that haven't been touched in years, sometimes rusting through at the seams, and tile roofs where the valleys have built up a thick mat of decomposed leaf litter and bark. Homeowners don't always realise how much debris collects in those valleys until water's backing up into the roof space.

The street trees around Marion are the main culprit. Eucalypts don't shed seasonally like a deciduous tree — they're dropping bark and leaves all year round, so your gutters can go from clear to blocked in a matter of weeks. Suburbs further north with younger plantings don't see it as much, but around the streets near Westfield Marion and out toward Sturt Road, those trees are well-established and they're generous with the debris.

The 1980s additions are their own issue. Builders back then often tacked on a secondary gutter run using whatever was cheap, and after 40 years those joins and brackets are corroding or pulling away from the fascia. I'll often find a gutter that looks fine from street level but is sitting at the wrong angle, pooling water at one end instead of draining. That standing water accelerates the rust and eventually you've got a leak into the wall cavity.

Downpipes block up regularly here too — organic debris compacts at the first bend and doesn't shift without a proper flush. If you're in one of the older homes near the council reserves or backed onto a street with a good tree canopy, I'd be checking those gutters at least twice a year, not once.
