Para Hills is one of those suburbs where you pull up and you can already tell the age of the house by the gutters. The 1960s and 70s builds around Kesters Road and Milne Road have galvanised steel gutters that have spent decades collecting gum leaf, bark strips, and tile grit. By the time we're getting calls, it's usually because water is sheeting off the fascia or pooling near the foundations — not dripping slowly through a blocked downpipe like people assume.

The mature eucalypts on the verges are the main culprit. Unlike deciduous trees that dump everything in autumn and leave you alone for six months, gums shed continuously. Bark strips, long leaves, seed pods — it builds up through every season. A gutter that looked clear after a clean in March can be half-blocked again by July when the winter fronts come through. We see it consistently in this area.

The elevated blocks near the hills edge add another layer to it. Properties that sit on a slope or have a storey drop at the rear are harder to access safely, and the roof pitch on some of these older builds means debris tends to slide and concentrate in the valleys rather than distributing evenly. Those valley points block first and block hardest. Tile roofs from this era also shed granules and mortar fragments that mix with organic debris and set almost solid in the bottom of the gutter.

Galvanised gutters on the older homes are worth paying attention to. Once rust takes hold in the seams or at the downpipe joints, no amount of cleaning fixes the underlying problem. We'll always flag that sort of thing when we see it so you know what you're dealing with.
