Pulling up to a job near Henley Square, the first thing you notice is how many of the older beach cottages are still running their original galvanised steel gutters. Some of those systems are 40-plus years old and they're fighting a losing battle with the salt air off Gulf St Vincent. The corrosion isn't always visible from the ground — you climb up and find rust-through on the back of the gutter, or a joint that's been weeping so long it's stained the fascia dark brown. Homeowners are often surprised because the gutter looks fine from the street.

The debris mix here is different to the eastern suburbs. You've got pine needles from the she-oaks and Norfolk pines along the beachfront streets, mixed in with the usual seagull droppings and the occasional feather matted against a downpipe entry. It sets like paste when it dries out. After a decent westerly pushes through — and they hit this stretch hard off the water — you'll find all manner of wind-driven material packed into corners and valley junctions.

The housing stock along streets like Seaview Road and Cudmore Terrace is a real mix. You'll do a 1920s cottage with half-round cast iron one day, then a 1980s brick rebuild with quad aluminium the next, then a new coastal build with fascia-mounted box gutters. Each one needs a different approach and the older galvanised systems need a careful hand — they can be brittle where the rust has progressed.

With the CFS Fire Danger Season running from around November through April, getting a clean done before spring is worth planning for even this close to the coast. There's enough dry debris accumulation on these properties that it's not something to leave until late in the year.
