Mitcham's a suburb where the age of the housing stock really shows itself in the gutters. You'll pull up to a sandstone cottage near Carrick Hill — gorgeous place, well kept — and find a box gutter that's essentially become a garden bed. Original galvanised steel, maybe 80 or 90 years old, packed with a mulch of plane tree leaves, elm seeds, and whatever the eucalypts have dropped from the foothills edge.
