Mount Barker's expanded fast in the last decade — new estates pushing out past the old town centre toward Abt Road and beyond — but the gutter problems here are driven by what was already here before the subdivisions arrived. Native bush doesn't respect property boundaries, and the gum trees lining older streets and backing onto rural-fringe blocks drop leaf litter and bark strips year-round. That's different to what you see in the city. By the time we get up a ladder on a property backing onto bushland near the Summit area, the gutters are often packed solid, not just leafy.

The bushfire compliance angle is something a lot of newer residents haven't fully thought through. Mount Barker falls in a BAL zone, and the CFS Fire Danger Season runs roughly November through April. A gutter full of dry bark and leaf matter in December is a real ignition risk — ember attack is how most houses go during a bad fire weather day. We always say get the clean done before the end of September, well ahead of when fire danger picks up. Leaving it to November is cutting it tight.

The housing mix here throws up different access challenges too.
